ATLANTA, GA: Today, Sen. Davd Perdue touted the continued reopening of the economy while avoiding the root origins of the nation’s public health and economic crisis.
Sarah Riggs Amico, progressive businesswoman and candidate for U.S. Senate, released the following statement in response:
“A day after our leading public health officials warned the nation against a premature reopening, David Perdue advocated for exactly that without a plan to address the critical factors contributing to the nation’s crisis.
As is typical, Perdue offers no acknowledgment of the structural and institutional inequities that have led to suffering among so many working Americans, and continues to ignore the worsening healthcare crisis in our communities of color and rural communities. Instead he advocates for placing more Americans at risk while simultaneously supporting Trump’s cruel efforts to strip healthcare from millions of Americans when it’s needed most.
Just yesterday, Dr. Anthony Fauci warned us that allowing economic interests to override public health concerns creates ‘a real risk that you will trigger an outbreak that you may not be able to control,’ leading not only to even more avoidable deaths but derailing any hopes of an economic recovery. Already we see states, including our own, ignore the administration’s guidelines for safely reopening.
It is telling that while boasting of an economic ‘reopening,’ the man who prioritized his stock portfolio over his constituents’ safety offered not one single word for the families of the 82,000 Americans who have died, the 70,000 more that the government now says it expects to bury by August, and the millions who remain at risk. But along with thousands of more lives, Perdue seems fine with burying the real work that America must do to bring about a safe and lasting recovery.”
